The highest-paid coaches in the PSL in the 2023-24 season

During the 2022/23 PSL season, Arthur Zwane was among the highest-paid PSL coaches. Arthur Zwane’s salary per month at that time was R800,000 ($42,500).

Unfortunately, Kaizer Chiefs demoted him to become the development coach at the beginning of the 2023/23 PSL season. As a result, it left him out of the list of the best-paid PSL coaches.

So, who are the highest-paid coaches in the PSL? Here is a look at the top ten coaches and their monthly salaries.

1. Rhulani Mokwena – R850,000 ($45,200)

Rhulani Mokwena is the coach who earns the most in the PSL. As of 2023, his monthly salary is R850,000 or $45,200.

He started his managerial career at Silver Stars, later known as Platinum Stars. In 2014, he became the assistant manager of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Between 2017 and 2020, Rhulani Mokwena was also an interim and assistant manager for Orlando Pirates and Chippa United.

In 2020, he became a co-coach at Mamelodi Sundowns and was announced as the team’s head coach in 2022.

2. Manqoba Mngqithi – R750,000 ($39,800)

Manqoba Mngqithi is among the highest-paid coaches in the PSL. He receives a monthly salary of R750,000 or $39,800.

He started his coaching career at Maritzburg City. He then managed other top teams in the PSL, including Chippa United, AmaZulu, and Golden Arrows.

In 2013, Manqoba joined Mamelodi Sundowns as an assistant coach. He became the team’s coach in 2020 and its senior coach in 2022.

3. John Maduka – R725,000 ($38,500)

John Maduka is among the best-paid coaches in PSL in South Africa. The Malawian international receives R725,000 monthly or $38,500.

He started his managerial career with Bloemfontein Celtic during the 2009/2010 season. He managed the team until the 2021/2022 season.

Maritzburg United then appointed him as its manager in June 2022. But he only managed 13 games when Royal AM FC hired him in February 2023.

4. Jose Riveiro – R650,000 ($34,600)

Jose Riveiro is a Spanish coach and the current manager of Orlando Pirates FC. He receives a monthly salary of R650,000 or $34,600.

Before Orlando Pirates hired him in June 2022, Jose Riverio managed the Finnish club Inter Turku. Since then, he has helped the Orlando Pirates win the MTN 8 and the 2023 Nedbank Cup.

Furthermore, he helped the team finish second in the PSL, qualifying them for the CAF Champions League in his first campaign.

5. Eric Tinkler – R650,000 ($34,600)

Erick Tinkler is among the best-paid coaches in the PSL. He receives R650,000 or $34,600 from PSL side Cape Town City.

The South African started his managerial career at Orlando Pirates in 2013. He went on to manage other PSL teams, including SuperSport United, Chippa United, and Maritzburg United.

He has reached two major finals in South African football. He reached the Telkom Knockout Final with Cape Town City and the MTN 8 Cup Final with SuperSport United.

6. Steve Komphela – Between R500,000 ($26,600) and R600,000 ($32,000)

Steve Komphela is among the most experienced coaches in South African football. He started his managerial career in 2002 as the head coach of Manning Rangers.

His experience has allowed him to coach the South African U20, U23, and National Team. Between 2020 and 2023, he managed Mamelodi Sundowns in the PSL.

The South African national became Maroka Swallows’ coach in 2023. He receives a salary between R500,000 ($26,600) and R600,000 ($32,000) from Moroka Swallows FC.

7. Gavin Hunt – R480,000 ($25,500)

Gavin Hunt is the current manager of SuperSport United. He receives a monthly salary of R480,000 or $25,500.

Gavin Hunt is among the few coaches who have won the most PSL titles. He has won four PSL titles, three with SuperSport United and one with Bidvest Wits.

Furthermore, he has scooped four Coach of the Year awards, the ABSA Cup, and the Nedbank Cup.

The South African coach started his managerial career in 1995 with Seven Stars and has coached eight times between 1995 and 2023.

8. Molefi Ntseki – R450,000 ($24,000)

Molefi Ntseki receives a salary of R450,000 or $24,000 monthly. His managerial career started in 2019 when he became the manager of South African U17.

He became the caretaker manager for the South African men’s national team between 2019 and 2021. In May 2021, the Kaizer Chiefs Academy appointed Ntseki as the academy manager.

The team later elevated him to head coach in July 2023. However, Kaizer Chiefs sacked him in October 2023 after several poor results.

9. Steve Barker – R400,000 ($21,200)

Steve Barker receives a monthly salary of R400,000 or $21,200. He is the current manager of Stellenbosch in the PSL.

He started his career in 2008 as the head coach of the University of Pretoria. His biggest achievement was helping the team reach the PSL in 2012.

Afterwards, he joined AmaZulu, where he was the head coach between 2014 and 2016.

The Mosostho national has been Stellenbosch’s head coach since 2017. Their highest achievement was finishing sixth during the 2022-2023 season.

10. Dan Malesela – R220,000 ($11,700)

Dan Malesela ranks tenth on the list of the highest-paid coaches in the PSL. The Marumo Gallants manager since 2022 receives a monthly salary of R220,000 or $11,700.

The South African coach started his managerial career at United FC in 2012. He has managed other teams between 2013 and 2022, including Cape Town All Stars, Chippa United, TS Galaxy, and Royal AM.

His highest honour came during the 2018-2019 season when he won the Nedbank Cup with TS Galaxy.
