Karim Mostafa Benzema is a sensational French striker who plays for the French national team and Real Madrid FC. Although his parents on the father’s side are of Algerian origin, Karim Benzema’s ethnicity is French by birth.

Karim is a practising Muslim from a family of footballers, with two of his younger brothers playing football for local teams. 

He is considered one of the most prominent strikers ever and has won over 24 trophies for Real Madrid.

Where was Karim Benzema born?

Karim Benzema was born in Lyon, France, on 19th December 1987, in one of the Eastern suburbs called Bron.

His father, who had migrated from Algeria, met Karim’s mother in Lyon, where they settled and raised their family.

What languages does Benzema Speak?

Karim is multilingual and speaks four languages: French, English, Spanish and Arabic. Unsurprisingly, Karim can speak four languages, considering his diverse cultural background. Karim was born and raised in France; hence, speaking French is most likely for him.

He also has Algerian roots, where Arabic is the main language. As for speaking Spanish, Karim admitted that when he first joined Real Madrid, he struggled to communicate with his teammates.

He had to put a lot of effort into learning Spanish in order to be able to talk and interact with other players.

As a strong Muslim believer, Karim Benzema attends the mosque frequently. He was recently spotted attending a mosque in Singapore. 

Karim has strong Muslim roots in Algeria, where one of his uncles is an Imam in a local mosque. He attributes part of his football success and well-being to his practising Islam.

Karim still practices fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan, even if he has tournaments and live games. In an interview with Vogue Magazine, he was quoted saying that his faith helps keep him focused on his career as well as bring benefits to his family.

That shows how much he values his faith and religion as a Muslim.

His siblings and family life

There is no doubt that Karim Benzema’s large and warm family has contributed in shaping him to become the great footballer he is today. He is the third child in a family of nine children.

The footballer has five sisters: Sofia Benzema, Nafissa Benzema, Laeticia Benzema, Lydia Benzema and Celia Benzema.

He also has three brothers: Gressy Benzema and Sabri, who are also footballers playing for local teams, and Farid Benzema.

Karim and his eight siblings all grew up in Bron Lyon as one family.

Who are Karim Benzema’s Parents?

Karim’s father, a businessman, is called Hafid Benzema and was born in Tigzirt, Algerian. Hafid’s father, who is Karim’s grandfather, was a man known as Da Lakehal Benzema. He hails from Tigzirt village in Ait Djellil, a town in Algeria.  

Da Lakehal and his family migrated to Lyon, France, in the 1950s to settle there.

On the other hand, Karims’s mother, Wahida Djebbara, a homemaker by profession, is French by birth. Although her parents originated from Oran, a town in Algeria, she was born in Lyon and grew up there.

Karim Benzema’s move to join the French national team

Benzema started his National Team football career by playing for local club Olympique Lyonnais in France in 2005. The team won the Ligue 1 title thrice, and Karim received the Best Player of the Year award.

Before that, he used to play for the French youth team and assisted them in winning the UEFA European Under 17 Champions in 2004.

Karim’s rise to prominence came in 2009 when Real Madrid awarded him a 35-million-pound deal to join Real Madrid. He has played for Real Madrid even since and established himself as one of the best players the club has ever had.
