His European career began at Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam, where he won the Eredivisie League Title twice in 2002 and 2004.

In 2006, he transferred to the Bundesliga to join German giant Borussia Dortmund, where he played in the number 10 role but struggled to impress at the club.

However, after joining Everton in the 2007-08 season for a £350,000 loan fee, he eventually joined the club permanently after a £2 million transfer.

The former footballer impressed the following season in the Toffees colours and was named Everton’s Player of the Season. He was later sold to Tottenham for £3 million, where he played and scored in the UEFA Europa League.

Steven’s influence waned after four and a half years at the Toffees club. He then moved to Sunderland for the 2016-17 season, where he played until his contract expired.
