When his parents moved to the United States, Weston McKennie started playing for Dallas Academy. Thus, the Dallas Academy signed him on a free transfer from GC Phonix Otterbach in 2007.

He then played for FC Dallas between 2009 and 2016. On 1 July 2017, McKennie signed for FC Schalke 04 from FC Dallas on a free transfer.

On 1 September 2020, Schalke 04 loaned Weston McKennie to Juventus FC. His one-year loan move to Juventus FC had a unique payment structure. First, the loan fee was €4.5 million.

However, Juventus could make the loan permanent once his season at Serie A ended on 30 June 2021. Also, if McKennie met specific targets, the option to sign him permanently would automatically trigger.

Fortunately, it seemed as though McKennie achieved those targets. As a result, the deal to sign for Juventus FC was €18.5 million.

However, the amount could also increase by €7 million based on achieving specific targets, bringing the total transfer fee to €25.5 million.

However, Juventus FC exercised the option to buy McKennie for €18.5 million on 3 March 2021. Also, he would receive bonuses that amounted to €6.5 million. On 1 July 2021, McKennie signed for Juventus FC on a four-year contract.

He would later move to Leeds on loan for the 2022/2023 season with an option for a permanent transfer, which will cost about €34million.
